According to the latest fDi Intelligence study, Addis Ababa ranked as the world’s second-best location to set up a data center. Beijing had the top spot and London placed third.
Addis Ababa has been able to capitalize on its advantageous cost/quality profile to attract FDI in data centers. Following the liberalization of the telecom sector, Vodafone-owned Safaricom, which won a newly issued mobile telecommunication license in 2021, announced plans to invest $100m to establish its first data center. Djibouti's Wingu Africa, US's Raxio, and Cambodia's RedFox also disclosed plans to invest in data centers in Addis.
The study benchmarks 100 of the world’s most attractive cities for FDI projects and ranks cities based on labour availability and quality, industry cluster, infrastructure and accessibility, general business environment and living environment – at a price point that remains competitive.
