Maungo Craft is a standout startup in Botswana, blending ecological principles with entrepreneurial innovation. Co-founded by Bonolo Monthe and Olayemi Aganga, the company is a leader in the circular economy, transforming underutilized indigenous fruits like marula into premium gourmet products. Their core mission revolves around reducing food waste, particularly focusing on upcycling morula fruit pulp—a byproduct of the booming cosmetic oil industry—into high-quality jams, marmalades, and preserves

With post-harvest food losses in Sub-Saharan Africa estimated to be worth $4 billion annually, Maungo Craft identified an opportunity to not only tackle this issue but also create an impactful business. By sourcing fruit pulp that would have otherwise ended up in landfills, they minimize waste and add value to local agricultural products. In doing so, Maungo Craft works with local vendors, from spice suppliers to fruit farmers, and has contributed to creating over 1,000 job opportunities in the value chain.

The startup’s innovative approach has garnered significant recognition, including the prestigious Gogettaz Agripreneur Award in 2019, a Gold Medal at the World Marmalade Awards in 2018, and an endorsement by the renowned chef, Martha Stewart. Maungo Craft’s success in global markets demonstrates how African entrepreneurs can thrive by leveraging creative, sustainable business models.
